I've been installing the "latest beta" each time a new release was out for over a year now and I've never had a problem.  I'm just wondering what the QA cycles are like.  How much testing does a pre-beta go through before it reaches beta status?

They go through testing on a number of installs before release. Generally the changes between releases are pretty minimal, so the requisite testing is pretty minimal as well.
