Hello!

I want to install m0n0wall on a Pentium II 400, 128MB memory installed. This should match the hardware-requirements well i think.

First i tried V1.233 running from a CD, but no Floppy-Disk available atm. System booted up properly, and i tried to assign the LAN-Interface (only one NIC installed). Valid Interface is called "fxp0" for example (tried several NICS) followed by MAC-address and status is "up" as the LEDs at the card / hub indicate, too.

I entered "fxp0" as LAN interface name, when i was asked for the WAN interface i just pressed return. As next step i set the LAN IP address to 192.168.178.5 and subnet mask to 255.255.255.0 and disabled the DHCP 'cause my LAN uses static adresses.

LAN IP address is set to 192.168.178.5/24 and i should be able to access the webGUI by entering the assigned IP is displayed, but there is no connection between my LAN (Desktop/Laptop) and PC running m0n0wall. Tried to ping in both ways and get 100% packet loss.

So i blamed it on the not available Floppy-Disk and chose the 1.3b11 'cause it supports USB memory sticks and i'm planning to install a WLAN-Card later when all is up and running. When the system boots the USB-drivers are loaded and i can see the device "umass0 USB Flash Disk" but i get a warning there's no memorystick found to save the config. If i detach the stick i get a message that "umass0: at uhub0 port 2 is disconnected" so the system knows there is a stick present.

The connectivity problems remain the same with 1.3b11 as V1.233 the evening before.

Now i've reached the point i don't know what to do anymore  Huh

After assigning the network interfaces, but before going further with the configuration, a reboot is usually required. But with no place to store the configuration, you will boot back into nothingness. Also, since two network interfaces are required, I wouldn't expect anything to work with one of them missing. Add another NIC.

As to the USB stick you are trying to use, how is it partitioned and formatted? If you were using a floppy disk, it would have to be formatted for MSDOS filesystem. I don't know for sure, but I would expect the same for a USB stick.

OK, so i was completely wrong to test it on-the-fly without a storage device Cool

I'm using an old 128MB memory stick, only one partition. I formatted it with both FAT and FAT32 on my Laptop using XP, but the problems remained. Seems as i have to go downstairs and search some old 1,44MB Disks in my cellar  Roll Eyes !
