I can't get the internet to work properly..

I have a speedstream 4200 modem/router combo with windstream dsl.

I changed the lan ip on m0n0wall to 192.168.254.253
my speedstream is set to 192.168.254.254

I enabled DHCP on m0n0wall for 254.100 - .250
I set DMZ on the speedstream to 192.168.254.253

and rebooted both

..

the setup looks like this so far:

m0n0wall pc
> speedstream modem (dc0)
> switch (em0)
>> lan pc

this is all i'm testing with for now. when m0n0 rebooted it said that em0: link is up 100 mbps full duplex. however it said nothing for dc0 even though the lights are on that it's connected on the back of the nic and on the modem.

I then connected my lan pc and it assigned the ip: 192.168.254.250 / default gateway/dhcp server/dns server: 192.168.254.253

.. then I typed in 192.168.254.253 and it prompted me and I logged in.

my dsl modem is a PPPoE connection however the username/pass is set inside the speedstream so I think I can safely choose DHCP for the WAN type? I tried choosing PPPoE in webgui and it just kept reseting my modem.. so I switched back to DHCP.

under Status: interfaces it says both WAN and LAN are up.

 WAN interface
Status    up
DHCP    up
MAC address    00:04:5a:8a:6f:0f
Gateway    192.168.254.254
ISP DNS servers    192.168.254.254
192.168.254.254
Media    100baseTX <full-duplex>
In/out packets    121/3 (12 KB/726 bytes)
In/out errors    0/0
Collisions    0

LAN interface
Status    up
MAC address    00:07:e9:09:d5:64
IP address    192.168.254.253
Subnet mask    255.255.255.0
Media    100baseTX <full-duplex>
In/out packets    596/515 (66 KB/128 KB)
In/out errors    0/0
Collisions    0

I'm thinking I need to do something else in the speedstream aside from setting the DMZ ip to forward to m0n0walls lan.. but honestly I have no idea.

192.168.254.254 won't connect me to the speedstream modem, and I can't access the internet.. any ideas on what I need to do next?

Right off the bat it looks you have an illegal network configuration. From what I can tell m0n0wall's LAN and WAN interfaces are both in the same 192.168.254.0 network. This is not allowed.

You can not reach your modem from the LAN without doing some extra setup steps. But get your network configuration fixed first and have things actually working before worrying about that.

Also, you really should try to put your speadstream into bridging mode and let m0n0wall do the PPPoE.

so should i disable the dmz? .. and switch the lan ip to 192.168.1.1 ?

I tried that before changing the LAN to the same subnet as the WAN and it didn't work either .. which is when I tried enabling the DMZ and everything.

It didn't connect to the internet with this setup either.. but I'll try to figure out how to bridge the speedstream to see if that fixes it.

Please try to read and follow the documentation with this project provided. You aren't going to get there by using settings pulled out of thin air.

thanks for helpful response.

I read the documentation and followed the instructions.. when I was finished it didn't connect to the internet. I tried to bridge my modem, and that didn't help either. I'm a newbie to networking.. but I'm trying my best to get it setup.

I also had a friend that uses m0n0wall walk me through the setup process, and he got stumped.

unless you can point me towards some useful information please don't post.

from your console:
1. reset your m0n0wall to defaults
2. assign your first NIC to the LAN
3. assign your second NIC to the WAN
4. set your LAN address to 192.168.11.1
5. subnet is 24
6. assign your DHCP range: 192.168.11.100 to 192.168.11.199

from your PC:
1. connect to your m0n0wall: http://192.168.11.1  (un:admin pw:mono)
2. change your WAN interface from DHCP to PPPoE
3. under PPPoE Configuration: enter your PPPoE username and password
4. connect your PC to your DSL router and set it to Bridged mode
5. connect your DSL router to your m0n0wall's WAN port
6. send Manuel a paypal donation and a "thank you so much" e-mail
7. consider not making any more comments like "unless you can point me towards some useful information please don't post."

I tried setting my DSL modem to bridge mode, and put my username/password in the PPPoE config in m0n0wall webgui.

it didn't work.

got it working finally with the internet.

I've been trying to forward a port with firewall->nat. when I bridged my modem that took away the "firewall" capabilities on the modem right?

when your DSL modem is in bridged mode everything including your public ip is passed on to your m0n0wall.

is it possible to reach my admin interface for the dsl modem in bridge mode?

the only thing I need is to be able to reboot the modem from my desktop without having to manually power it down/back on.
