Topic: Dumb question about config on USB memory stick  (Read 4461 times)

I have checked the forums and have seen a couple of questions, but no answers as yet.

I am trying to get M0n0 1.3b15 (CDROM version) running on a new box which has no floppy drive.  I understand from the m0n0 site that 1.3 can store the config on a USB memory stick.

M0n0 comes up each time perfectly, but issues a message that "No FAT formatted USB memory stick or floppy drive could be found".

I know that M0n0 is recognizing the memory stick.  When I plug it in, the console gives the following message:

umass1: Kingston Data Traveller 2.0 rev 2.00/2..00, addr 3
da4 at umass-sim1 bus1 target 0 lun0
da4: <Kingston Data Traveller 2.0 1.00> Removable Direct Access SCSI-2 device
da4: 40.000MB/s transfers
da4: 1911MB (3913728 512 byte sectors.  255H 63S/T 243C)

I get similar messages when I disconnect it.

I did follow the advice of another forum poster and used a linux system to fdisk and mkdosfs the memory stick, but this had no effect.

Can anyone tell me how to get this working or where I can find more information?

Thanks in advance!
James

Are you plugging in the USB stick before M0n0wall boots?

Yes, although while experimenting to try to get it to work, I have tried waiting until after.

Are you able to try a different USB stick?

I did try a different one, although it was the same size (2GB) and from the same manufacturer.  Same results.

I have not tried one from a different manufacturer, although that might be a sensible test.

Thanks!
James

I have subsequently tried a 2GB drive from another vendor with the same results.  I am considering making it bootable and seeing what happens.

Fourwheeln:

Thanks for your post.  I had already seen this solution, but it didn't work for me.  Making the drive bootable did work, although in some ways it is not a truly optimal solution.

Just for the record, I tried formatting the USB stick under Windows and Knoppix with no success.

Regards,
James
