Topic: connecting to shared printers over VPN: not working  (Read 2105 times)

Trying to get a XP Pro workstation (computer A) to print to a shared printer on a remote XP Pro machine (computer B).

The two computers are connected via a m0n0wall VPN connection.

The computers can ping each by IP address, but not by name.

The two computers are listed as having the same domain name.

Both computers have File and Print sharing turned on, and have that listed as an exception in their firewalls.

Neither computer can "browse" to the other computer using either \\<computername> or \\<IP address>

I am stumped- guessing it's a setting in the M0n0wall, but have no idea where/which one.  Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Can you use RDP (remote desktop protocol) from one machine to the other? When I VPN into my home office from my laptop, I use RDP to connect to my desktop, then do stuff from there. I don't know if this helps or not.

What is you network setup like?

Did you make sure the firewall exceptions cover the ranges and not just the machine?

Thanks for the replies, guys - appreciate your input/help.

@ JiveMiguel: they are using VNC to connect from a computer in Network B to a computer in Network A, but they want to be able to print directly to a (USB) printer shared on a computer in Network B from another computer in Network A.  There's only one computer in Network B that is in use during the day, so getting an RDP or VNC connection to that network unfortunatly isn't feasable.

@ knightmb: they are using IPSec for the VPN connection, but I'm not sure if that's what you mean by network setup.  When you say: "the firewall exceptions cover the ranges and not just the machine" if you mean the firewall on the machine or the M0n0wall.  I will check tomorrow by turning off the machine's firewall completly while I'm testing.

Thanks again

I see now I wasn't clear, my apologies.

On the windows Firewall configuration, the scope for the "file and print sharing" only allows the current subnet access. Since the two computers are on separate ranges (I think?) then the firewall blocks it from working. Basically, change all the ports for to allow any computers, like in the screenshot below.
