I use m0n0wall for home use, and I like to have NAS support for network backup. There are a lot of NAS distros but I need to install new hardware for it.

I think is a good idea to connect a USB disk and can access it from any PC.

Thank's for this space. Thank's for m0n0wall.  Wink

It's doubtful that m0n0wall would add NAS support, since FreeNAS exists.  But perhaps the two could be combined together by rewriting the startup scripts and putting the appropriate packages together...it would probably not be easy nor secure...

a combination of the two OSes would certainly make my life as a server admin MUCH more easy.

even if FreeNAS just had a firewall (basic rules processing) that'd be great.

Highly, highly unlikely if you'll ever see this in m0n0wall. It's not appropriate, from the Development page on the site:

"Note that feature enhancements may not be accepted if they don't fit in with the m0n0wall design philosophy (small, efficient design for embedded systems, security – m0n0wall is a firewall and not an all-purpose network device, so things like file/print/mail serving do not have a place within it)."

That's probably how things will stay for the foreseeable future.

Personally I would never recommend using a firewall as a NAS, but know it's acceptable to some people. pfsense has FreeNAS in development releases and it may make it into a release version (as an add on package) 1-2 versions in the future.

Please m0n0wall a true firewall !!!
If you want stuff like this, buy a Fritzbox
Or setup a miniITX box with any BSD or Linux Version on it
Or use FreeNAS Great stuff !!!

Add an extra interface on your monowall box and sit the box running free nas behind it, then you have a firewalled nas device  Smiley...it would be a bad idea to run windows file sharing from your firewall...infact the idea makes me shudder Sad

What are your thoughts on an integrated TFTP-server for hosting kickroms for PXE booting?
Would this be a bad idea? How about an add-on package that can be left out if you don't like the feature?

it would be nice but it does not go with m0n0walls philosophy.

I vote for a VERY small and integrated TFTP server for serving config files to my modems and stuff. I think that's resonable.
