There is probably a simple answer to my problem but I am stumped.

I cannot install Monowall on an IDE hard drive and get it to run. Everytime the computer gets past the post notices and tries to read the hard disk on which I have installed Monowall, I get the same error message: Read error

I have tried different size disks and different machines
I have tried disks formatted in FAT32, NTFS, no format, no partition.
I have tried installing with physdiskwrite, Freebsd, Chris Buechler's Live Installer
I have tried using fixmbr and fixboot from the XP disk
I have tried different downloads from different sites of generic-pc-1.31.img
Similarly with physdiskwrite
Nothing works. Always "read error"

I must be doing something wrong and probably very simple but I can't figure it out.
Can anyone suggest what I am doing wrong?

Is the hard disk the first master disk in the system? There might be problems if the disk is set to be a slave or is on the second IDE channel, or on the wrong connector of the cable. Verify any jumpers on the disk too.

The existing format and boot track of the disk are meaningless, the entire disk will overwritten by the installer to have the correct format and boot track.

I've got the exact same issue; am using 'dd if=m0n0wall.img of=/dev/disk1 bs=16' from a console window on my mac. The file shows it copies correctly, and it worked for a CF card, but not an IDE drive (via a USB-IDE adapter).

Turns out the IDE drive works fine in the same PC that the CF card worked in; must be something funky with the on MB (old Intel Redwood board). I'll check back if I get it to work.

Try disabling everything unnecessary in the bios.

maybe the virus warnning or boot sector security.

Do you have a regular IDE port or it is a SCSI built on motherboard?
