Hello!
I do shape traffic for 8/1 adsl connection.... i do understand shape outbound traffic as then we may control what packets goes and when and we do not overflow adsl bridge device memory and put packets to queue there... also ACK must be priorized

I do have 1 out pipe and 3 out queue 70, 29 and 1 weight. destination mask source on outbound queue and pipe

We have many users.. simultaneous

Far is I understand there is no sense try to shape INBOUND traffic as the ADSL speed is 8 mb/s there is nothing we can do (inner network is 100 mb/s ethernet). We should have no reason to shape IN traffic, actually we should make no shaping, just try to delivery packets fast as possible..

Actually there is no usage for input inbound pipe with ADSL connection? So the pipe size should be example 2x real speed?

I do understand the purpose of outbound shaping, but not inbound shaping.

Also, what it means, if i put destination mask to INBOUND pipe?

Thats a good question, i am no pro but i can think of a scenario where inbound shaping could help:

you are playing a game and downloading a big file via http at max speed http does not care about lag time

so it keeps sending data even when its being hold out in your isp routers (because they are limiting your download speed)

this is getting you a big lag in your online game

now the shaper part

the http server is only sending you data at that speed because your computer is getting it and sending replies saing "data is ok, send more"

so if you make http packages wait in shaper, the server wont get its: "data is ok, send more" so soon and will stop sending packages untill it gets that msg, making your trafic at your isp routers less then your limit speed, making your lag in the game lower.

Im I wrong? (im also a noob)
