I have the following config:

router (x.y.z.1)----HUB----PC (x.y.z.3)
                                  -----M0n0 (x.y.z.2)

(pc uses subnetmask 255.255.255.240 - in M0n0 I set the WAN IP to x.y.z.2 /28 - x.y.z is NOT a private range but an "internet" range)

PC (x.y.z.3) can ping router (x.y.z.1)
when I try to ping from M0n0 (webinterface) the router (x.y.z.1) via WAN - if gives HOST DOWN

Both PC and m0n0 are set to have x.y.z.1 as default gateway.
(and yes I did reboot to m0n0 system)

The m0n0 system has NO rules set, just starting with it...

Any ideas?

little follow up:
probably the problem is that when I check the status of the interfaces, that m0n0 shows for the WAN interface:
 Status: no carrier
 Media: none

I tried it with a HUB and a SWITCH, were it both cases the cable AND the ports are working fine and still no go :-(

Extra follow-up (AND solution)

Seems that the LAN interface is ETH0 (that I did know and did configure correctly)
Seems that the WAN interface is ETH2 and not eth1 as seemed logical to me :-(

I'm using a Soekris net4501.

So issue solved, it was just me that was using the wrong port on the Soekris box :-(
