Topic: Suggestions on fanless internet gateway  (Read 5167 times)

I've used m0n0wall in the past, and I have a few boxes with it loaded (Nortel/Bay networks instant internet 100-s and other models) but they are old and loud and big.  I would like to run m0n0wall as my internet gateway/NAT router.  I would set it up to terminate VPN connections while I'm away.

I've read through the forums, and seen some stuff, but figured I'd ask.... It has to be fanless, ideally aesthetically pleasing (I can hide it if its not), and obviously needs to have at least two eth ports.

Lastly it needs to be priced right.  I have no legitimate need for this item, I already have a nat/router, actually a few of them - so it needs to be inexpensive enough to justify tinkering.  Also it needs to have horsepower, if speedtest.net shows it is slower than what I currently have it would end up being pulled.

Any suggestions, success stories, ebay links, etc ... much appreciated.

Look for ALIX or Soekris boards.

Of course I can appreciate the need to find something within your budget, but you're not helping matters by not telling us your budget. How much are you willing to spend?

I used a neoware thin client, just ebay pfsense, or m0n0wall, and they can be had for less than 100USD. I gambled, and bought mine for 12USD, and got bit as it has no PCI riser, I ended up just using vlan tagging to do all my interfaces on one.

completely silent, 2 leds, and little heat. Uses 21 watts idle.

I bought a Neoware CA10 a few months ago off EBay.  It didn't have a PCI riser so I also bought one of those for $10 off another EBay user.  I have a portable CD-ROM so I didn't bother fiddling with USB boots.  Installed m0n0wall easily, configured the NICs, edited and uploaded the configuration from the PC m0n0wall that this thing was replacing, booted it and was up and running.

I would recommend a Nokia IP firewall or a Watchguard Firebox x500, x700, x1000, x2500. The Nokia's can be found for $30-$50 on ebay and the fireboxes are about $100.

Works quite well.  Uptime is currently 24 days with no issues.  I got the three interface version yet I'm only using two of them (WAN, LAN, OPT1 is down status.)  Using v1.33 generic pc with no issues.

Was there something in particular you were looking for an opinion on?

Hi pr1ap1sm,

I am using a number of Nokia IP110 or Nokia IP120 devices on WAN connections of up to 20Mb without throughput problems. (I've never stress tested one of these)

If you are VPNing I would recommend the IP120 as it has twice as much ram (128Mb) than the IP110 which does help it along.  They do need a bit of initial hardware config to make sure the MAC address is OK, but easy to do with a PATA based laptop in hand.

Best bit is that they are wall mountable, silent (external switch mode PSU) and the design is not that bad looking.  (Note: Beauty is in the eye of the beholder :-)

James.
