Random Captive Portal device redirect issues

Even with version 1.81 we are still experiencing random issues with iDevices (iPhone & iPads), safari doesn’t redirect to login page.
We just had an issue with an android tablet this morning, was redirected to the page but came up with an error saying the page was no longer there and it hung on the address. I disconnected the device from our wifi and then reconnected, and when I typed in a new webpage it finally got to the login page.
Any suggestions why captive portal works fine with some devices and then at random hangs up on droids or apple devices? I have even seen it hang up on MS OS systems as well......I do know that google now went to a https site and peoples home page being now set to a https site may effect this?
Any and all suggestions or fixes would great be appreciated. thank you....

It is mostly the https sight being home pages, and update processes running in the background that do not know to log in causing this. If you can sniff a new device connecting, you might be able to find some of these hidden update servers and place them in allowed IP addresses.

on droids and apple devices though? I can understand that on laptops.....why would handheld devices randomly not display the redirect page?

How do you think the Google Play store works? https... Later droid versions are login aware, and will give you an option to log in to wifi, but early ones do not.

Captive portal does not hang up. The device does. The solution is add the sites it automatically goes to, to the allowed IP addresses so they are not filtered.

Lee, what I have been doing to get around this issue is tell people to type in their favorite color....(red.com) ect ect and that seems to kick start the CP page to load on their device. Just an FYI.....
Thanks for all your help.....

I do something similar, but choose a real website they are unlikely to use. ford.com is good if they are not looking for a car. 5fm.co.za is may last ditch fallback.
Not many people in the USA listen to South African radio...
