Any help would be great!

I use an 512 Mb Super Stick from Kingmax with MSI K9NGM-L motherboard .Monowall 1.22 , 1.23 and 1.3b2 work fine .Monowall 1.3b2 boot very fast, i belive its support USB 2.0.

I posted about this on the mailing list. I had no luck trying to boot from usb using 1.3b2. You can search the list archives for "invalid slice" if you want the dirty details.

I Googled a bit and found directions for using windows and freebsd to create bootable usb drives, but I don't have windows or freebsd at home to try these methods, nor did either method look very applicable to my particular problem.

not only booting from USB drive .AsRock K8NF6P-VSTA boot from USB ,but the system freeze whem Monowall is loading

My USB drive shows up in the BIOS setup as an ide drive. Not sure if that qualifies as usb-boot support or not. Anyway, it starts to boot off the usb drive, but doesn't get off the ground.

I'm using an ASUS M2NBP-VM CSM. Not sure if the motherboard is the problem, but it seems to be a good board otherwise, ie, it runs monowall 1.3b2 very well off a cf card under decent load.

I'm having the same problem on an OpenBrick-E.  The system boots from a USB stick just fine using SYSLINUX (to boot Devil Linux), but the m0nowall boot hangs with a single '-' character.  Any ideas would be appreciated.

I'm following up on my question.

I did get the usb drive to boot. I'm using an Intel 945 mobo thats supports USB Booting.

I used the HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool to format the drive with a bootable FS. Then I followed the instructions in the setup guide for m0n0wall to complete the install.

Works like a charm. I'm going on 3 months without a manual reboot.

Thanks for the follow-up. I looked into the HP tool you mentioned and it appears to be Windows only. Anybody know of a comparable *nix tool?

Incidentally, doesn't writing the mono image using physdiskwrite or dd create a partition, file system and MBR in the process? I'm having trouble grasping the concept that any prior prep should affect the bootability of the imaged drive.

I realize this is an ancient thread, but could you supply some more detail on getting m0n0 onto a USB stick?  I'm no newby [in fact, I have several bootable FreeBSD USB sticks laying around], but this hasn't been as simple as:

format with HP utility & 'gzcat *.img | dd of=/dev/da0 bs=16k'

It least it hasn't been for me.

Pointers?
