I tried to connect to the console of my net5501 using baud rate 19200 and a straight-through serial cable... this didn't work. What can be the problem?

You need a null modem cable, not a straight through cable. Some computer bioses will let you reverse the Tx and Rx pins, in which case you may be able to use your straight cable.
