I have just wrote my first image onto a usb flash drive and when I boot to it, set my adapter and IP address, and try to ping anything including 127.0.0.1 I get "ping: sendto: Network is unreachable".  Is there something I am missing?  prebuilt images work just fine.   Adapter shows up as "em0".

Is there some way I could add shell access to my image?

Thanks!

So I added /usr/libexec/getty and /etc/gettytab and /etc/ttys to my image to try and get a console but I just get garbage.  I am not familiar enough with FreeBSD to know what I need to do.

Any ideas would really help.

Describe in detail how exactly you modified the firmware.

Adapter shows up as "em0".

You only have one NIC? That's not going to work, you have to have two NIC's unless you're using VLAN's with a properly configured switch.
