This is just an informational post for those considering loading M0n0wall as a virtual machine.

In all versions, M0n0wall causes VMware Server to lock up when running after a certain period of time.  This has been attempted in multiple cases by me with the newest versions of VMware and on multiple different machines.  In every case, no matter if I used a pre-configured VMware M0n0wall distribution, or I installed it myself, the results were the same.  Unpredictable and eventual firewall crash.

However, Virtual PC and Virtual Server run M0n0wall great with one exception.  M0n0wall will continually report that the clock is being resynced and will get slightly spammy, but will work great.  We have been using a Virtual Server M0n0wall distro for over a year now for several servers and it is a highly reliable and fast solution.

Has someone tried M0n0wall on any other virtual machine platforms?  I would like to know your thoughts and experience as well.

Just thought the community would like to know.  Good luck.

Hi,

Yes i have the same problem, i though first may be it is the server hardware (Dell poweredge 2650).
I tried on different hardware, i get the same result, monowall hangup for no reason.

Thanks for the information, i though it's only me who have this problem.

Hi,

I can confirm this issue here as well. I'm running m0n0wall on VMware Server (v1.0.4), and it seems to crash whenever it gets close to ~24 hours or so. The system itself (running Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition R2) is stable and operational, though the VMware process uses 100% CPU, and m0n0wall doesn't respond.
Though this is easily fixed by a simple reboot, it's still annoying. So now I'm thinking about changing to Windows Virtual Server 2005 and see how that goes.

Anyone have m0n0wall running on other VMware software (ESX, Workstation) and can confirm that the same thing happends there?

EDIT: m0n0wall crashed after running for 21 hours on Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 R2 Enterprise Edition... (100% CPU Usage)

i run my x-monowall for weeks without any problems. it's run on vmware server, vmware workstation, even player. and it also works perfectly on vmware esx. it's a custom build monowall version specially adapted for virtual environments. you can check it out at http://www.vmware.com/appliances/directory/150. just updated it with the new 1.233 build.

Before I bought a WRAP I also ran m0n0wall in a virtual machine with MS Virtual Server.
It worked flawlessly and had an uptime of up to three months, then I had to reboot after a firmware upgrade.
I experienced the time out of sync issue as well, but it was nothing to really think about.

Nice to see you running m0n0wall in MS VS, too.
(MS VS is absolutely underrated, especially in comparison to VMware.)
