I setup m0n0wall a couple of weeks ago.  Everything was plugged in, rules set up, NAT all ready, everything was running fine.  I'm on a DSL line (thus PPPoE connection).

Then, in the middle of the night, the Internet stops working completely.

I get into the m0n0wall web config through the network.  Nothing seems to be out of place.  I reboot everything, modem included, no go.  I check the logs: the connection keeps timing out.  Sometimes m0n0wall reports the WAN interface as being up, sometimes it claims there's no carrier.  Regardless, absolutely no Internet connection, no matter what I do.

I take away the m0n0 box and plug in my former router in its stead.  Everything works perfectly.

I have absolutely no idea of what could have caused the m0n0 box to suddenly give up on the Internet connection like that.  What could possibly be causing this?

Sounds like maybe your ISP isn't allowing a new device to come online for some reason?  Odd that it would initially work and then not, but that's the only reason I can think of.

On a technical level, the DSL modem doesn't know what's communicating with it.  My past routers (Linksys wireless, Linksys 4-port wired, D-Link 4-port wire/wireless, Inexq 4-port wired) all have complied quite readily with the modem.  On occasion, I plug the m0n0wall box back in with a glimmer of hope, but I guess hope alone is not enough.

My ISP sent me a new DSL modem to try to work the problem out.  I'll redo some tests with the new hardware and see what happens, although I honestly don't expect much.

It's too bad because while it was working, my m0n0 box was arguably the best router I ever had.   Sad

Hi,

I had exactly the same thing here UK.

M0nowall was running fine via PPPoE (modem in bridge mode) for months and then about 10pm on a Sunday night NO GO! And till today it will not work any more, even with a brand new modem. Now I can only activate PPPoA on the modem to get an connection and this is not what I want, 2 NAT boxes behind each other…

Sorry not being able to help you with this…
