whenever someone who needs it implements it. I don't envision it happening any time soon, if ever, because nobody with the capability of doing it has expressed any interest.

No, there's plenty of people asking for it, but asking for it isn't going to make it happen.
Somebody who wants it is going to have to implement it - that's how open source works. To date all the people who want it are either not willing or not capable of implementing it.

If you need this feature check out pfSense. m0n0wall does not support it.
