In a nutshell:
Is there any security risk involved in switching from 1.2 to 1.3b (currently: 1.3b14)?

Long version:

I'm a satisfied user of 1.235 on an old standard PC in CD/floppy configuration. I really like that fact that this configuration is very reliable w.r.t. breaking hardware components: Just put the CD and the floppy in another old PC with two network interfaces and everything runs again. I can teach an end-user how to do that, which means that I (the admin) don't have to be available 24/7. :-)

The only drawback of this option is the need for floppy disks and floppy disk drives, which are both very unreliable and break very often. Thus, I'd like to replace them with a USB stick, which is only supported by 1.3b.

It says on the beta download page that the beta versions "may contain serious bugs and are not to be used in any production environment". Basically, I would like to know which kind of "bugs" are meant here:

(1) "buggy" in the sense that some features might not work, some hardware might not be supported and that some things might crash or be unstable, but it's basically as "safe" as 1.2 [which would be OK with me]

OR

(2) "buggy" in the sense that the firewalling or VPN authentication components are likely to have gaping security holes and running 1.3b is like connecting an unpatched Windows 2000 directly to the Internet?

I would also like to know if I can upgrade to a 1.3b version. I currently have 1.235 running on a WRAP for my home network and there are some features of 1.3b that I would like to use. So far I have not upgraded because of that "bug" warning.

Can someone with experience using 1.3b explain what kind of bugs they have seen?

Thx

Alan

I'm running 1.3b15 on over 40 production units and having zero problems.

Would highly recommend it.

Well, I finally took the plunge and so far so good. No problems upgrading all my config was carried over. Now time to start playing with some of the new features  Cool
