m0n0wall sounded very appealing to me due to it's traffic shaping capabilities. I planned to use it to dedicate certain pipes to VoIP and others to data. I've already run into a problem though. I want to make the m0n0wall box the main router with my dynamic IP FIOS connection. I've done everything from releasing the Verizon router's DHCP lease via it's web admin, having the FIOS techs do it over the phone and also reboot the ONT, had m0n0wall spoof the Verizon router's MAC address, etc. etc., and constantly tried release/renewing with this bug fix but still the box isn't picking up an IP address. it just remains 0.0.0.0/255.0.0.0. Can someone tell me where the (hopefully obvious) solution to this lies?  Huh

a friend of mine in the Dallas area has FIOS but his m0n0wall's WAN interface is set to PPPOE not DHCP.

Thanks for the tip Roy. Unfortunately, I double checked via the Verizon router's admin and the connection is definitely DHCP so I'm still stuck.

have you tried connecting a PC directly to your FIOS connection to see if it gets an IP?

also, you might want to give pfSense (nanobsd 1.2.3) a try.  your CF card needs to be 512MB or larger an the RAM requirements are a little higher.

Sorry for the late response. Yes, my laptop can get an IP when directly connected to the ONT.

Is jumping to pfsense the only available solution? I don't have the hardware lying around. I'm willing to buy something preconfigured like this but only once I've exhausted any possibility of m0n0wall not working out.

EDIT: After googling, I came upon this thread:

Quote
On to making this work with your non-actiontrash router.... The first thing you will notice upon connecting your nice shiny super high throughput pfsense router is... it doesn't work. The ONT (network box connected to the fiber on the side of your house) locks onto the mac address of the actiontrash router your kind installer kindly setup for you and gives it a DHCP IP address.

...For me, I simply unplugged the old Actiontec router in the morning, plugged in the new shiny super fast and configurable pfSense router, and went to work. When I came home it was working (after a minor firmware update). I would recommend running the latest march or later snapshots to get this working.

I'll try that Thursday evening, hook up the ONT to m0n0wall and then check on it in the morning.

No go even after trying the above.  Undecided

Looks like I'll order and try out one of these: http://www.netgate.com/product_info.php?cPath=60_85&products_id=546

Thanks for the tip Roy. I would've gone for the 2D3 since that since it's only marginally more expensive compared to the 2D2 but I wanted a working box ASAP and the 2D3 won't be in stock till tomorrow. For my purposes, 1 LAN/1 WAN should be fine though.
