Hi there,
I've had m0n0wall for a little while now, and I'm loving it. I was using smoothwall before and it was using a lot of resources.

Anyways, my question deals with Releasing and Renewing the WAN IP from the Status -> Interfaces page.  I have to reset my modem sometimes, not very often, but it does happen.  When I unplug it, I have to release and renew the WAN IP on m0n0wall, but when I try to renew, it brings up the IP 0.0.0.0, so I end up having to reboot m0n0wall in order for it to renew the IP, which doesn't take very long at all, but still. Grin

Any help is much appreciated, thanks. Cool

Also, I just upgraded to the latest version 1.23, didn't fix the problem.

I too have had the same issue. My work around is usually to turn off my DSL modem for approximately 5 minutes, then bring it back up. Most of the times this avoids a reboot.

Speaking of reboot, I managed 270+ days of uptime, then someone reset it at my house.

Call me baby.

I'm running m0n0wall, on an old Pentium II machine.

So is this a bug? I had a mod that performed the same function in smoothwall, worked perfectly every time.

It's not a bug, as this functionality has always worked. Could be a quirk with your modem, or something specific to your ISP, or who knows. 0.0.0.0 means DHCP couldn't renew the IP. There are a lot of quirky Internet connections that don't renew properly. Maybe your modem wants a link down/up, if you unplug and replug your WAN cable that might let it renew.

i don't really understand what you want to do. if you put your internet ip you lose connection with the internet server... is this on the m0n0wall wan or lan interface? are you sure you use the right submask?

my english is poor , i will try to be more precise .my provider has change the type of connection very recent  ,from static IP 's into DHCP  .When i white the memory stick with Monowall , and boot from it , the defaul settings of monowall will provide internet in LAN by DHCP (default Monowall settings is DHCP in WAN with a rule that provide internet with DHCP in LAN) .Everything its perfect in this moment .The WAN settings are: IP adress 89.37.94.101 ,mask 255.255.255.0 , Gateway 89.37.94.1 ,dns 89.37.94.1  .The LAN settings are : 192.168.1.199  , 255.255.255.0 , gateway 192.168.1.1 , DNS 192.168.1.1 . The problem begin when i change the setting in LAN ,more precise ,when the lan settings is change in: 89.37.94.1 ,255.255.255.0 and the dhcp range its from 89.37.94.2 - 89.37.94.200 .reboot is required ....then after monowall is rebooting the dhcp server from monowall assign the ip 89.37.94.199 to the computer connected to LAN ,but the internet its no longer working .I begin the diagnostic .First i ping Monowall ,and ,very strange ,i get request timeout . I lock again to the connection details an see the Default gateway is 89.37.94.1 . I try to connect with internet explorer to monowall "http://89.37.94.1"  and i get "You tried to access the address http://89.37.91.1/, which is currently unavailable".Second step : Shut doun monowall ,unplug WAN and start again .Now i get ping from monowall and webgui its working ,but when i plug the WAN and i press the renew button i get the ip 0.0.0.0 .I work with monowall for very long time ,my proffesion its network administration ,and i ensure you its no human error .i try 2 days to make the LAN and the WAN working in the same time but without luck (even with static ip  in WAN).I guess Brando and randyc  has discover the same problem

so if i understand you correctly then you want to have the same public network on your lan...

on your wan you have from your isp dhcp
wan 89.37.94.101/24 defgw 89.37.94.1 dns 89.37.94.1
on your lan you create this network
lan 89.37.94.1/24 defgw 89.37.94.1 dhcp range 89.37.94.2 - 89.37.94.200

box on lan gets 89.37.94.199/24 gw 89.37.94.1

i really don't understand why you want to have the same network on both sides of m0n0wall...  Huh  this will never work... i firewall is like a router and not a bridge... it can't have the same networks on both wna and lan interfaces. why don't you leave the 192.168.1.0/24 network on the lan interface?

bt

Bitonw you understand correctly , but my problem now its not DHCP ,because my provider let me to put static IP on WAN (I need to rute 25 IP's 1:1 , i'm a little provider) .Now, i cannot use monowall to rute this Ip's, because its not working , its a limitation somewhere .I post here because in my search to resolve this i meet the same problem as Brando and Randyc ,and i sure they have the same problem .With  192.168.1.0/24 on LAN i have some limitation , Ex. in DC++ every computer need to complete the routed IP on Active boxed .

mariusmotea: please do not hijack threads - you have a completely different issue from the person who started this thread, and you'll likely get better response if you start a new thread dedicated to the specific problem you're having.
