Hi there

This might seem like a pointless question so be forgiving.

I have set up M0n0wall and given the WAN card a static IP (10.0.0.2)
My router has a static LAN IP of 10.0.0.1
My router has PPPOe with a username and password.

Which is better to do?

Have Mono do the PPPOe thing and have my ADSL router as a modem (I think is the right term)

Or let my router do PPPOe and give Mono a static IP (like it is at the moment)

Hope that makes sense.

Regards
G

Typically it's better to just bridge your modem and let m0n0wall do the PPPoE. Then m0n0wall will have your public IP directly assigned on it. No double NAT, which is good, and DynDNS works right that way.

Thanks for the reply

2 questions:

Putting the router into modem mode, would that null all other settings including firewall rules, NATTING, DynDNS etc. Why I am asking, can I remove the settings, (basically reset the router to factory defaults)

Also, I use a laptop as part of the internal LAN. I currently connect directly to the router via wireless (therefore bipassing the firewall and proxy) If I change my router to modem mode would I still be able to do this?

Thanks
Gareth

If you're talking about all those settings on the router/modem itself, yes, you'll have to recreate all that on m0n0wall. Those things on the modem are only meant for using the modem as your only firewall.

That's specific to your modem, your modem's documentation or its manufacturer will have to answer that. I would guess the answer is probably no.

I phoned my routers manufacturer and they gave me a command to convert my router into a modem. They said that it is not supported as the router has no official option to convert it from router to modem. So, I doubt that my laptop will then work.

Is there any reason why my internet browsing would be slower after installing M0n0wall? Well I don't think that it should be so there must be something wrong somewhere.
It might have something to do with the whole router/modem question. Here is my current setup.

Netgear DG384GT router connected via PPPoE and has a LAN IP 10.0.0.1
I have added my ISP's DNS address aswell.
NAT is enabled, DHCP is disabled, DMZ points to 10.0.0.2 (not sure why this so), no firewall rules.

My M0n0wall's WAN NIC has IP 10.0.0.2. I have added rules in the NAT section for my WAN NIC (I hope this is correct) pointing to the relevant internal static LAN IP address.
The LAN address my M0n0 box 192.168.0.254.

Also, I have Censornet (CN) setup as a standalone proxy for browsing which I have setup in bridge mode.
I have set the DNS entries on the CN box to my ISP DNS address and the gateway to my M0n0 LAN IP. I assume this is correct.

Everything else on both machines is setup pretty much in default mode.

I don't know if perhaps general browsing was slow yesterday, or if it was my setup.

I know that you don't "support" Censornet, but I would think that the networking principles would be the same.

I would appreciate you input.

Gareth

Same problem here.
using m0n0 since 2+ years.
Only recently I tried with my ISP ADSL router alone and wow browsing was so fast.
After convert the router into modem and plugged into my m0n0 box, the browsing so slow.

I did try so many test, with 3 different m0n0 boxes, all with 3com or Intel Pro 10/100 network card, with 3 different modem (netgear, zyxel) but same same result.
M0n0 config is the basic basic one, without any traffic shaping, or other special setting, just PPoE.
Damn so slow the browsing, but the download of a file use all my band.

Anything I revert back to router only (no m0n0) all the pcs in the LAN are flying!

I'm trying IPCOP now and it seems fast as my router, much faster then m0n0.
(and IPCOP is now seated on the same m0n0 box)
I will try PFSENSE tomorrow (on the same PC)
I'm not going to change my m0n0 box to anything else then m0n0 itself, even if it's slow... just wanna try to understand... WHY!

I did make a similar post but nobody did reply!
