I've been running m0n0wall for a few years now to great effect, first on some old PCs, but now that I have it running in a small, quiet Netvista I couldn't be happier.  Unfortunately, now I'm running into some problems with it.

Last week I borrowed a friend's Xbox 360 for the Halo 3 beta.  I just set it to get an IP address from the router and everything worked perfectly fine; I didn't even have to bother with opening any ports or anything else of the sort.  I stopped playing for a week, but when I started back up again today, I can no longer accept invites to all games, nor can I invite other people to any games; the connection just ends up timing out.

I gave the 360 a static IP and checked which ports I had to open, since I didn't bother to do that at first (But I was still able to connect just fine).  After running the connection test, my NAT settings still come up as Moderate, and I'm still unable to connect to games.  The thing works fine with a direct connection to the modem, and I didn't do anything at all in the week when I stopped playing other than upgrading the router's firmware, which leads me to believe that did something.  I tried rolling back the firmware, but I'm still unable to connect to games.

I'm out of ideas for what I can try to get the thing working again, although since I have no idea what could have caused it in the first place, I don't have very many ideas to begin with.  People have suggested putting the 360 on a DMZ, but I don't see a simple way to do that in m0n0wall's configuration.  Has anyone else run into any problems with getting a 360 to connect to Live?

I'm experiencing pretty much the same problems.  However, if you read through what the terms (open/moderate/strict) for NAT means on the xbox site, basically if you have a Moderate NAT then you can only connect to other players who also have Moderate NAT's or Open NAT's.  So you may just need to keep trying.

I have seen some games have more luck with finding valid players than others, not really sure why that is, other than perhaps the number of users.

GAAAAH!!!

I'm having the same problem, I've had like 6 different firewalls and I like Mono the Best so far, been using Mono for about a year now and I CAN'T get my XBOX 360 to say "Open" it's on Moderate.

THE BIG Problem is that it tries to connect a moderate nat to moderate nat, and with Mono it's not very compatible with other moderate nats, so the connections time out, etc..

I've forwarded ports, and beat my head into the wall trying to figure this out. I don''t have two external IP's so that other post on this forum about that won't do.

Hmmm.... I'm about at my wits end on this one, I'm about to port scan the damn Xbox 360 and forward every damn port I find... even knowing that some ports change....

I'm still having this behavior, however I've just accepted the fact that it will not be in the "open" state.  From what I've read around here, and elsewhere, it will continue to be not open unless the router supports UPnP.  Sucks, but i guess you gotta give something up to have a good router...

I have exactly the same problem, can't get better than moderate NAT. I have just accepted it.
I think that pfSense (I think that's correct) supports UPnP.

I don't play a heck of a lot online so it doesn't bother me too much.

Cheers

Kind people,

As I've been messing with this tonight there seems to be a port that Xbox is trying to contact that is unsettable in m0n0wall.  It's a 5 digit port.  Something like 36354.  I've been able to successfully pass 88 and 3074, but this last one keeps getting blocked and it appears you can't set a rule to allow passage on 5 digits port numbers.  Anybody else seeing the same thing?

Has anyone tried connecting the 360 to OPT1 and setting up a DMZ on that interface.
