Just trying to understand the significance of hardware. We have a 1G internet connection, only about 20 PC's connected but large and long file transfers.. several hundred gigs. So what impact does hardware have on this type of activity? We have an FTP on a DMZ  so also do transfers from there to the green network a lot.

The limitations of buss speed at that point.  Very few systems can actually push a full gig through a gigabit card.  Some max out with as little as 600mbps.  You will need a buss that can handle 4 gig because you will have one in and back out on inbound and another in and back out on outbound...

This is assuming that you have gigabit Internet, not just a gigabit port...
