I have a i386 PC (1.7 GHz Celeron Dell) that I'd like to use m0n0wall on but the WAN link can't get a dhcp lease.

I have my cable modem in bridge mode and when I boot up to pfsense live cdrom, fxp0 gets a lease immediately. When I boot up to m0n0wall, which is installed on the hard disk, fxp0 doesn't get a lease.

Should I try the r570 beta?

Are you rebooting the modem before booting into m0n0wall?

Yes.

I noticed that when I boot to the cdrom installer it takes maybe a full minute after the install menu appears before the fxp microcode is loaded. Also, the installer wants to use sis1 as the WAN interface and there is not sis device in the system. In mainline FreeBSD (and pfsense) the system has fxp0, em0 and bfe0.

sis are the default interfaces in m0n0wall. You have to configure interfaces, then select from those that are recognized.

Are you saying that my fxp0 or em0 interface may appear as sis0 or sis1?

No. That's not what I am saying.

What I am saying is that when booted the first time, sis are the interfaces displayed even if those are not the type in the machine. When you configure interfaces, m0n0wall will detect and display whatever supported interfaces it finds.
