Hello folks,

after googling around about OpenVPN support for m0n0wall I've been quite disappointed. Peter Curran added OpenVPN to the 1.2-betas but it disappeared after 1.2b10. With 1.2 stable, Peter Allgeyer continued to patch the stable releases of m0n0wall, but 1.21 is the latest one available with openvpn support.

Since I've used m0n0wall from the early days on I always were up-to-date with the latest stable releases and therefore a downgrade to 1.21 just for OpenVPN was no option.
So (coming from the linux corner and never used *bsd except with m0n0wall, where you won't have to see much of the internals if you don't want to) I started firing up a development FreeBSD installation to port the OpenVPN part from 1.21-ovpn1 to a vanilla 1.231. After some evenings of work I managed to build a new image which actually booted on my wrap-board and it seems to work quite well here.

Currently I only used the openvpn-binary from 1.21-ovpn1 (by Peter Allgeyer), which is Version 2.0.5 (current stable OpenVPN is 2.0.9) but as soon as I find some time, I'll face compiling a new one.

Because I don't have any other platforms to test than a wrap-board I only built an image for this one. With this topic I wanted to ask if there is anyone who's interested in the other images with OpenVPN support.

Let me hear what you're thinking,

Flo,

I'm really interested to have 1.231 with OpenVPN support (latest preferably)
for 4801 :-) I do have some of those boxes in the filed that I want to manage
remotely (ipsec is no option (behind NAT))

Hello Rudi,

sorry for the delay, I found some bugs during testing the image in production but I'm definitely going to build a net4801 package for you as soon as I resolved those bugs.

@Mr. Happy: Do you use the pc-generic image or the iso?

I downloaded the VM from http://www.xs4all.nl/~brugh/
I'm not sure which version he used to make it...

Hi All,
has anyone made / patched openvpn on a recent version of mono ?

I'm looking for a generic pc image.

I've looked in betas and old versions, but can't find 1.2b10 generic pc

Can any one point me in the right direction ?

I want to test OpenVPN. Also does anyone know why it was removed in subsequent versions ?

Thanks

I would love to see openvpn (or a better ssl vpn alternative ??) included in mono

Hello Flo

Did you continue porting openvpn to m0n0wall? Is there an image (for WRAP-boards) available for download anywhere?

thanks

I'm know I reviving a zombie topic, but I'd love to see openVPN in m0n0. The fact that it doesn't have it is a turn off (but I like the rest of mono so well!) Is there any more work on this???

The last release of m0n0wall was 5 months ago and we seldom see a post from Manuel so I wouldn't hold my breath for any new features.  Don't get me wrong,  I'm very thankful for everthing Manuel has done but it sure looks to me like m0n0wall is on life support.

Yeah, and that's too bad. I think I'll be switching to something else. But thanks anyway!

I like not having a new release every week though, makes it easier to support a large base of m0n0wall systems out there. Until there is a radical change in the way the Internet works or the price of cheap PCs skyrocket, I don't see m0n0wall as just disappearing anytime soon.

I like that m0n0wall tends to stay on the stable edge rather than the cutting edge, though I haven't tried of any the betas yet.

It begs the question though, what really needs to finished up in the beta? I've often thought about donating some dev time to m0n0wall since I use it so much. I do donate money and server hosting for files, but I'm willing to do more to help things out. I figured though, you don't want too many cooks in the kitchen, so I just try to help with any bugs or whatever I might discover along the way.

Last I checked the code repository, it's had commits since just a few weeks ago, so it appears to me a lot work is going on behind the scenes, maybe that's why we don't see them much here.  Grin
