I recently discovered monowall and freeNAS while looking up firewalls and NAS stuff.

I was wondering if anyone has combined monowall & freeNAS or something similar?

Instead of running multiple pc's one for each I think it would be cool to have a gui type firewall with built in NAS.

Hasn't been done.

It may be available as a package in a future pfsense release. Some work has been done with that integration, but it needs a lot of work still.

Nobody has done any work on integrating m0n0wall and FreeNAS that I've heard of at least.

I would recommend using m0n0wall as is, because you really don't want too much going on with your gateway / vpn. Since so many things (computers, people, voip phones, servers) you don't want it to ever go down. Since m0n0wall and its variants (like FreeNAS and Askozia) are able to run on inexpensive, low-power hardware, my plan is to use them on separate hardware.

I guess it would be better seperate but I was just wondering as a average home user.

It does get kind of messy if you have several seperate pc's doing different chores.

Like one for network storage, one for apache & ftp, one for router/ firewall, etc.

If you want all that you could get your hands dirty and do the whole thing on one PC with FreeBSD or Ubuntu.  The book Absolute BSD will take you through getting all that you want up and running.

One of m0n0wall's strengths is that it is a very focused project.  It does a small set of things very very well.
