I have just recieved a used mono router. I have no idea of the former ip scheme or it's password.
I have noticed a small reset button in the front of the box. I have tried to hold that button in while powering up the device with no luck. I have downloaded the manual and have read the parts about resetting, however it does not indicate how to reset if you can not access the web consol of this device.

Any ideas as to how to perform a hard reset?

You didn't say what kind of device it is. If it has VGA hook up, plug in a monitor and use the console menu. Otherwise you need a null modem cable and to hook up to the serial console.

it's a maroon box 3/4" high x 6" x 6"
It has a WAN port, LAN port (some other port) and a serial cable in the back

sounds like a WRAP if I had to guess, you'll need to hook a null modem cable into the serial port and use hyperterminal or similar to connect to it at 9600.
