Hi ,

I  would  like  to  build  a  custom  Monowall  image. When  I  went  through  the  Hacker's  document  guide;  it seems  to  me  that  the  instructions/steps  are  used  on  FreeBSD 4.1 - RELEASE  and  I'm  using  8.1 RELEASE. Could  all  of  the  steps  still  be  applied  using  FreeBSD 8.1  or  are  they  obsolete ?

Secondly,  I'm  looking  for  proper  guide/information  on  how  to  create  custom  monowall  images  on  the  web but  haven't  found  anything  useful. I  would  like  to  request  for  some  ideas/info  from  the  experienced members  of  this  forum.

Thanks,

M0n0wall is currently based on FreeBSD 6.  For more info on m0n0wall being based on FreeBSD 8, see this thread: http://forum.m0n0.ch/index.php/topic,4748.0.html.  Basically, it's in the works but it may be quite some time yet.

Does  that  mean  that  my  attempt  of  creating  a  custom monowall  image  will  not  work  on  FreeBSD  8.1 RELEASE ?

Could  you  also  please  provide  other  information  pertaining  to  building  a  custom  monowall
image  for  embedded  hardware - if  you  have  them  at  your  disposal.

They  would  be  very  useful  to  me.

Thanks,

I'm not a developer, so I've no clue on how to build m0n0wall.  There is a branch in the SVN repository for freebsd 8.  You may want to take a look at this document, it seems to be a good jumping off point.  Hopefully brushedmoss or one of the other Dev's will jump in and be able to answer your questions better.

Thank  you  Iridris,

The  SVN  link  you  provided  was  particularly  very  useful  to  me.
But  of  course,  hopefully  some  other  developers  would  help  me  out  as  well.

Hi Andy8

The dev handbook is based on older freebsd, but should work for freebsd6

There is work in progress for freebsd 8.1 right now, but its not ready for even a beta yet.

What are you hoping to customise ?  depending what your doing, it might be easier to modify the current image instead of building one from scratch

Hi,

I'm  actually  modifying  the  current  available  image  (embedded-1.32.img)  to  be  exact.
I  would  like  to  change  the  GUI  and  add  additional  applications  such  as  GreenSQL  and/or  TeredoBSD
to  beef-up  the  firewall  system.

In  those  terms,  have  you  got  any  resources  apart  from  dev  handbook  that  may  be  useful
to  address  the  aforementioned  aim ?

Thanks,

I gave a very brief overview of how to modify an image here

http://forum.m0n0.ch/index.php/topic,4215.0.html#msg13576

I would imagine you will need to make the image bigger to fit these new binaries and their dependencies in though.

you will figure out a lot from that script, good luck !
